If you ask an Anna Maria Island local about their favorite time of year, there’s a pretty good chance October will be somewhere near the top of the list. Summer vacation crowds have thinned out, the Gulf is still warm, sunsets come a little earlier, and getting a table at your favorite island restaurant gets a whole lot easier. October is one of those sweet spots when Anna Maria Island feels a little slower and more relaxed, without giving up the beach weather that brought you here in the first place. If you're considering an October getaway, here's what you can expect.
What Is the Weather Like on Anna Maria Island in October?
October is when we finally start noticing that Florida technically has seasons. Early in the month can still feel very much like summer, with warm afternoons and plenty of beach weather. As the month goes on, humidity generally begins to ease and evenings become more comfortable.
The Gulf also holds onto its summer warmth well into fall, so October can still offer plenty of opportunities for swimming, paddleboarding, boating and simply floating around in the water. Of course, Florida weather never comes with guarantees. October is still within hurricane season, and an occasional rainy day or late-season storm is possible. But on a typical October day, sunscreen and flip-flops are still much more useful than sweaters.
Fewer Crowds, More Island
One of the best parts of visiting Anna Maria Island in October is simply having a little more room to enjoy it. The busy summer travel season has passed and the winter snowbird season hasn't fully arrived yet. That can mean less competition for a spot on the beach, easier dinner plans and a more laid-back feel around the island.
It's also a great time to explore beyond your usual beach chair. Ride the island trolley, wander Pine Avenue, visit the shops and restaurants along Bridge Street, head to the north end for a walk near Bean Point, or rent bikes and see where the day takes you.
Spend the Day on the Water
October is one of our favorite months to get out on the water. Book a fishing charter, rent a boat, paddle through the mangroves, look for dolphins or spend an afternoon cruising around Tampa Bay and the Intracoastal. If you'd rather stay closer to shore, that's perfectly acceptable too. Grab a chair, find your favorite stretch of sand and enjoy the fact that an October beach day on Anna Maria Island is still very much a beach day.
Eat Your Way Around the Island
Less-crowded fall days are also a great excuse to work your way through some of Anna Maria Island's restaurants. October brings the beginning of Florida stone crab season, and fresh Gulf seafood is always a good idea. From casual grouper sandwiches and waterfront lunches to date-night dinners, there are plenty of options packed onto our seven-mile island.

Fall brings some fun local events to the island and surrounding area. October typically includes community events, live music, markets and seasonal celebrations. One of the island's biggest fall traditions is BayFest, when Pine Avenue in the City of Anna Maria fills with food, music, vendors and plenty of local flavor. Catch an Earlier Sunset
Summer sunsets on Anna Maria Island are beautiful, but they can make for some very late dinner reservations. By October, sunset arrives earlier, which makes it much easier to enjoy the best of both worlds. Walk down to the beach with a drink, watch the sun disappear into the Gulf, head back to your vacation home to clean up, and you can still make it to dinner at a reasonable hour. That's our kind of schedule.
Where Should You Stay?
Anna Maria Island may only be about seven miles long, but each part of the island has a slightly different personality. The City of Anna Maria offers a quieter, residential feel and easy access to Pine Avenue and the north end. Holmes Beach puts you near the center of the island, while Bradenton Beach offers easy access to Bridge Street and the south end.
